FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers on the questions Kansas City families ask us most.

How much does a funeral cost in Kansas City?

It depends heavily on the option chosen. Direct cremation typically runs $845–$1,295, cremation with a memorial service $2,400–$4,800, and a traditional funeral with burial $4,570–$19,300. See our full Cost Guide for a line-item breakdown.

How quickly do we need to make arrangements?

There's no need to decide everything immediately. The only time-sensitive step is arranging for your loved one to be transferred into a funeral home's care. Services, cremation vs. burial, and paperwork details can typically be worked out over the following days.

What VA burial benefits are veterans entitled to?

Many veterans qualify for burial in a VA national cemetery at no cost, a government headstone or marker, military honors, and in some cases a burial allowance. Read our VA Burial Benefits guide for details and next steps.

Is cremation or burial better?

Neither is inherently better — it depends on your family's budget, timeline, and traditions. Cremation is generally less expensive and more flexible on timing; burial offers a permanent, physical place to visit. See our full comparison for details.

Are payment plans or financing available?

Many KC-area funeral homes offer payment plans, especially for pre-need arrangements made in advance. Standard health insurance does not cover funeral costs, though some life insurance or final expense policies may apply.

Can I prepay for a funeral in Kansas City?

Yes. Most Kansas City funeral homes offer pre-need (prepaid) arrangements, funded through a small insurance policy or a trust held by the funeral home, and many will guarantee today's prices on the services you lock in. You sign the contract directly with the licensed funeral home. See our Pre-Planning guide to understand your options first.

What happens to prepaid funeral money if a funeral home closes?

Missouri and Kansas require pre-need funds to be held in trust or through a licensed insurance policy — separate from the funeral home's own money — so if the business closes or changes hands, the trust or insurance policy generally follows you and can be transferred to another provider. Keep your contract paperwork and confirm the trustee or insurer it names.

Do you charge families for your service?

No. There's never a fee to call us, ask questions, or be connected with a local funeral home. We're a free family-service resource, not a funeral home ourselves.

Do you serve both the Missouri and Kansas sides of the metro?

Yes — we help families throughout Kansas City MO, Overland Park, Olathe, Lee's Summit, Independence, and greater Johnson County, and can point out state-specific paperwork differences where relevant.
