The City of Independence Health and Animal Services Department (Municipal Commons, since 2024), Jackson County Public Health on S. Liberty Street, and Missouri's Bureau of Vital Records all issue certified copies. The funeral home you choose typically orders them so your family doesn't have to stand in line.
The hospital
Centerpoint Medical Center (HCA Midwest Health) on E. 39th Street is eastern Jackson County's major hospital. Families there — or with any area hospice — can be connected with nearby funeral homes that handle the transfer of care.
Historic cemeteries
Woodlawn Cemetery, city-maintained on E. Pacific Avenue, spans 56 acres with more than 33,000 graves and dates to a 1922 merger of three older cemeteries. Cemetery costs (plot, vault, opening and closing) are separate from funeral-home fees — budget for both.

Where do we get a death certificate in Independence?
